What is the Best Temperature for Red Wine?

Fun little fact: People tend to keep red wine at "room temperature" but really, "room temperature" was a term originally put into use when most homes were kept at a temperature of 60º F. Today, most rooms are heated to 72º F and this can become a bad news situation for your beloved beverage. At 72º F, red wine starts to taste more like alcohol than actual wine.

The ideal temperature for red wine can become tricky, but at 63º F the flavor is very pleasant. A cabernet sauvignon at this temperature provides a flavorful taste of berries, black cherries, currants and oak. It is very interesting how a slight alteration in temperature can have a profound effect on the flavor of wine.

How do you achieve this temperature? The best rule of thumb is to pop your bottle in the fridge for roughly 15-20 minutes prior to drinking it. This should lower the temperature to the desired level.
